Go Vegan and Save the World!

Go vegan and save the world.
What’s that? You think that might be overstating the benefits just a tad? Maybe, but not as much as you might think.
Adopting a vegan diet undoubtedly has an enormous benefit not only on you own health by lowering your chances of suffering from Type II diabetes and heart disease, amongst other ailments, but the planet also gets a huge kickback. Globally switching to a more plant based diet could see a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by two thirds by 2050 and save around 8 million human lives researchers from Oxford Martin School claimed in a 2016 research paper.
And then of course there are the animals.
Very sadly around 600 million animals are slaughtered in Australian abattoirs each year. This shocking number includes a vast number of male chicks and male calves which are sacrificed because they are considered surplus in the poultry and dairy industries. And no matter whether these animals lived a ‘free range’ existence or in the worst of environments, they all make their way to Australian abattoirs at a fraction of their normal life span and in the most frightening circumstances. Fish are no exception either, with worldwide numbers of fish and shellfish caught worldwide exceeding 22 billion a year and most essentially having their lives ended by suffocation.
Your body will thank you, and so will your brain.
Becoming vegan may or may not happen overnight, but it you can make it happen. There are so many websites and movements now offering advice on how to maintain your nutrition through a vegan diet, and there are no end to vegan recipes online. Every day in Australia we see new ingredients and products lining our store shelves. Even if you only include one day per week where you eat nothing but plant based meals, you’re going some way to saving the world! And not only will your body thank you for this, your brain will too! Let's face it, most people don't want to think they've contributed to the misery of animals.
And so will the animals!
